The history of the Cartier Panthère

Updated: Jan 6, 2022

The Panthère, much like the fierce, untamable feline, possesses many facets to

its personality and continues to be reimagined in countless jewelry designs of

the brand since 1915, largely inspired from Jeanne Toussaint (nicknamed "La

Panthere"), first creative director of the Parisian Jeweler.

Timeless icon born in the 80’s, the Panthere de Cartier watch has been

unveiled back in 1983 in different sizes and finishes.

Solid gold 18K or two tones, the panthere de Cartier is still one of the strongest timeless design of the brand that is recognized around the world since 40 years!

Part of the Panthere’s appeal is its timelessness. It’s characterized by a square case and bezel with visible screws, a white dial sporting Roman numerals, with a touch of blue accents visible on the hands and crown.

The watch caracterizes itself with a fine bracelet that is made up of five interlocking links and an invisible clasp, which not only give the watch an elegant appearance but also make it incredibly comfortable to wear.

As a result, the Panthere de Cartier can be seen as a jewel more than a watch…. perfectly matching the 80s “glam” aesthetic!

In 1991, Cartier added an all-steel version of the Panthere, making the watch more accessible to a larger audience. Of course, since Cartier is first and foremost a jeweler, there were several diamond editions of the Panthere timepiece available as well.

Cartier updated the Panthere collection in 2017 with new materials (introducing rose and white gold) with a slighty new clasp.

Considering buying a second hand can be an interesting option considering the price increase of the watch (a two tone starts at 7,700€ when a 18K solid gold starts at 20,800€).
